Math Placement Test - for Incoming Students

Math Placement Test for Incoming Students

IIT’s Math Placement Test is a diagnostic tool that evaluates your skills in Basic Algebra, Analytic Geometry/Pre-Calculus, and Trigonometry. You do not "pass" or "fail" this test, but rather the results are used to help you and your advisor make an appropriate placement choice into your first math course here at IIT.

Do all students need to take the Math Placement Test?

Yes, all students must take the Math Placement Test. The only exception is for students who already have equivalent college transfer credit for Math 151 (Calculus I); or who have already received a score of 4 or 5 on the Calculus AB Advanced Placement exam or a score of 3, 4, or 5 on the Calculus BC exam (with a 4 or 5 AB sub-score). These students do not need to take the Math Placement Test.

Students who are currently finishing calculus courses for college credit, or who took the Advanced Placement Calculus exam in May, still must take IIT’s Math Placement Test (online now), so that they may register for IIT courses before course grades and AP results are available (typically July). However, please note that any earned transfer credit or Advanced Placement credit will override the results of your Math Placement Test, and your course schedule can be adjusted appropriately at that time. Information on other transferable college credit and AP credit is available online.

Students currently enrolled in a high school Trigonometry or Pre-Calculus course are advised to complete their course before taking the Math Placement Test.

When is the Math Placement Test administered?

Information about the Math Placement Test will be e-mailed out after May 8.

The test is composed of three independent sections: Basic Algebra Skills, Analytic Geometry/Pre-Calculus, and Trigonometry. Each section of the test must be taken exactly once and completed online within the specified time constraints.

Those students with identified learning disabilities and who require additional examination times should contact Matthew Bauer, Director of Undergraduate Academic Advising, via email at bauerm@iit.edu for further instructions.

How do I prepare for the Mathematics Placement Exam?

Though not required of students, a Practice Test that reflects the overall range of topics covered in the actual placement exam is also available online. Your User login is your UID (your iit email address without the @iit.edu) and your Password is your student ID ("A" followed by 8 digits). You are already pre-registered in the class "Math Placement Test." This Practice Test may be taken repeatedly, and the scores on the Practice Test will have no effect on course placement.
