IIT 101 Sessions.

This year we are introducing a new program for students, families, counselors and teachers who are interested in learning more about IIT. We will be hosting IIT 101 Sessions in five different suburbs of Chicago--we are bringing IIT to you!

We hope that you will be able to join us for an evening reception with IIT staff, faculty, alumni and current students to learn more about the application process, scholarships, academics, student life and future campus visit opportunities. Don't worry, there will be light hors d'oeuvres and beverages served throughout the evening!

All receptions are from 7-9pm. Check-in is from 6:45-7pm.

In order to best serve prospective students to IIT, the Office of Undergraduate Admission has 10 counselors who are here to work with you! So you may ask, "Who is my admission counselor?" Well, the counselors are each assigned to a geographic territory and work with students who attend high school in that region. All 10 counselors have states within the U.S. and Illinois is further divided up since we travel extensively within the state. Additionally, three counselors (including myself!) divide up the international recruitment process because the international students at IIT come from over 90 countries.

You may see who your counselor is by visiting our Contact Us link. Click on the different states or the globe and your admission counselor's information will appear. We have added pictures so you will recognize us when you come to visit! They are quite fun... here is a sample of my picture!

  All of the IIT campus tours are led by Student Ambassadors which allows students and families to learn more about campus from the student perspective. Unfortunately most of the students were out of town recently for our August Open House. We were expecting a large crowd so we trained the admission counselors to help give tours to our guests. We had try-outs and the counselors had an obstacle course, backwards walking relay races and a quiz bowl to determine the best guides! The students put us to the test and only the toughest survived--haha sounds intense, right?! :)

I thought I would give you a glimpse of the tour that we received from two Student Ambassadors, Pablo and Sarah P. We had a great time and it was nice to hear about their personal experiences on campus!

We began the tour from Perlstein Hall and headed north past Herman Hall (the building peering between the trees). Did you know that IIT has an on-campus bowling alley? The Bog is located in the basement of Herman Hall and has about eight lanes for bowling, pool tables, games and a bar area for food and drinks. It is open on the weekends for students to relax after a long week of school work!

 ACADMICS AT IIT

IIT has recently renovated most of the classrooms on campus. This is a typical classroom on campus. You will notice that the size of the classroom--it doesn't need to be too large because the average class size is only 25 students.

 In addition to classrooms, students spend a significant amount of time learning in the research labs on campus. IIT is a research-based institution which means that there is a heavy emphasis placed on providing research opportunities for all students. This is a picture of one of two MMAE research centers in the department, theFluid Dynamics Research Center and the Thermal Processing Technology Center.IIT  values collaborations with industry professionals as well as students and faculty from other universities.

 STUDENT LIFE

The MTCC is the student center on campus. You may have seen pictures of this building before which was built around the "El" train so it has been featured in many Chicago publications (as well as our own). The MTCC has the main dining facilities, bookstore, 7Eleven, post office, computer stations, pool tables and other games. It is centrally located on campus which is nice because you will spend a significant amount of time in the MTCC.

There are two different residence hall options on-campus. MSV is a traditional style residence hall that is comprised of double-rooms (there are a limited number of singles and triples), communal bathrooms, large lounge areas and study/work rooms. SSV is a newer dorm on campus that allows students to live in suite and apartment style rooms. There are also lounge areas and shared kitchens on each floor and an outdoor balcony on the top floor. They are both great options for students and we are pleased to provide housing for all students during their time on campus.          

Well, that was a brief glimpse at the Admission Staff tour of campus. If you have not yet visited campus you may arranged a visit Mon-Fri or during one of our Sat visit days. Can you believe summer is almost over and the school year is about to begin? Time flies by so quickly!

Today marks the move-in day for all students attending the final Orientation session which is August 19-20. If you are a new student who hasn't yet attended an orientation session, please sign up by emailing orientation@iit.edu.

You may find the Fall 2009 Go-To Guide extremely helpful as a new student or current student at IIT. The Office of Undergraduate Admission wishes the best to all students and we hope you have a successful year!

On Saturday, August 8, IIT held its second of two summer open houses. We had a spectacular turnout this time -- 118 students and nearly 300 guests in all. Guests came from all over the U.S., from California to Texas to New Jersey.

As usual, there was breakfast and lunch, an admission and financial aid overview session, a chance to sit and chat with members of the IIT community, and more.

Thank you to all of you who came out this past Saturday; we couldn't have made it a success without you. If you weren't able to make it but are still interested in visiting IIT's campus, there are still plenty of opportunities available, including fall open houses, weekday and Saturday visits, and plenty of special events.
